Classifiers
Have you ever said, “Sign language looks so beautiful� Classifiers are the most iconic part of American Sign Language (ASL), meaning the ‘sign’ looks like what it is representing. Classifiers are a major part of ASL storytelling, poetry, and information sharing. Come learn about classifiers and your ASL will improve by leaps and bounds! If you don’t know classifiers, you don’t know ASL!
This class will be conducted in spoken English.
Prerequisite: having taken at least one sign language class already. No book required.
Course Objectives:
ï‚§ Identify the 3 major categories of classifiers.
ï‚§ Manipulate the 5 parameters to construct descriptions.
ï‚§ Distinguish between movement within a sign and a sign making a movement.
ï‚§ Switch between real world and model constructs.
ï‚§ Use figure and ground appropriately.
ï‚§ Be able to tell short stories using classifiers.
ï‚§ Identify the origins of many signs via classifiers.
Class time: Saturdays, 10:00-11:30am; Feb 4 – Apr 8
